“The Officers not only from my LA but the others in the region, who were involved in this development activity, gained a breadth and depth of knowledge about the post ECM integrated services agenda that has stood them, and their LAs and therefore the region, in very good stead. I commend the approach of peer based, evidence based, real time learning.”

“As a DCS we know that succession planning is really important. I have been pleased to see how colleagues have been able to use the developmental opportunities from VSC courses to increase the breadth and depth of their knowledge and skills, building towards their next career steps in children’s services.”

“Integrated services for children require resilient, high calibre leadership. Involvement in VSC courses offers colleagues opportunities to develop necessary skills and useful networks to build their leadership skills for the future.”

NCSL becomes the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services

On 15 September 2009, the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) became the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children’s Services.

The change reflects the recent extension of the National College’s remit to include responsibility for providing training and support for directors of children’s services (DCSs) and those who aspire to the role.

In partnership with the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS), the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) and a group of experienced DCSs, the College has been developing a children’s services leadership programme which will start in the autumn. This work has been supported by the Virtual Staff College. A separate programme for aspiring DCSs will be launched next year.

The National College will continue to deliver for school leaders with a range of strategic initiatives, leadership development programmes and policy and research activities to enable them to develop their leadership skills.

Welcoming the name change, National College Chief Executive, Steve Munby, said: “Our new name underlines a shared commitment to improving the lives and life chances of all children and young people. Our extended remit builds on the success of our continued work to support leaders in schools and early years settings – work that is already making a positive difference.”
